The power of social media to boost your sales
Why is social media so important when it comes to your business? When you want people to buy something you’ve created, or a service you’re offering, it’s really beneficial for them to KLT you–know, like, and trust!
When they view you as an expert, they’ll be way more likely to purchase from you, and to recommend you to others. This is an age-old industry strategy!
The overwhelming majority of Whitney's nutrition and Beautycounter clients come from Instagram–as much as 80%! So don’t underestimate the impact of social media on your business.
Using social media to build your email list
How do you get people from Instagram to your email list, and subsequently as a client or customer?
This is something I do often! By talking about a free guide, ebook, masterclass, or webinar on social media, I drive leads (potential clients) to my email list. I’ve added more than 500 people to my email list from promoting just one free webinar – so this converts really well! When you use the freebie (be it a guide or a webinar) to prep your email list for an upcoming sale or promotion, you get even more sales potential!
5 tips for using social media to grow your business
While it’s not required to have a successful business, social media is the quickest, easiest way to grow your business! These tips will help you make the most of your social media presence.
Go where your audience is
Instagram is what Whitney and I both recommend as an easy way to get started, though I do believe that YouTube is where I would have started if I had known how to leverage it! The important thing, though, is to go where your audience is.
Post consistently
Do you need to post on social media every day? Nope! We just recommend posting consistently. So try posting every other day, rather than trying to post daily and then giving up for two weeks straight. This way, your audience knows what to expect from you and they’ll grow to trust you even more.
Authenticity
Authenticity is the number one way to build trust with your audience. People can totally tell your energy over social media. If you’re just replicating someone else’s content or approach, you won’t get the results you want! Be you.
Show up in ways that make you seem a little vulnerable. Make people feel like you’re their best friend–it really makes your authenticity shine through!
Syndicate your content
Syndicating your content is a great way to extend your reach and minimize your time investment. An example of this is converting a well-performing Instagram post into a blog post, that you then send out in an email round up. You’re potentially reaching three different pools of your audience, but you only created one piece of content!
Create captivating content
Whitney and I created a method for creating captivating content called the Engagement Enchantment Method. This works flawlessly every time! You can get more info on this method in our course.
Here’s how it goes over a multi-frame story:
- In your first story frame, you’ll need a qualifier. Such as “Do you struggle with ___?”
- Next, you’ll show them the solution.
- In subsequent frames, you’ll give them a step by step of how to get to that solution.
- In your final frame, you put a call to action (CTA.)
7 strategies for successful social media sales
I recommend eventually combining all of these strategies, although you don't need to hit them all in one day! Start with 1-2 strategies, and slowly add more. Eventually (and ideally), you'll hit on all of these strategies throughout a weekly rotation of your social media sharing.
Have a strong CTA
A strong call to action is a MUST HAVE no matter where you’re posting. A call to action is just that–you’re giving your audience an action to take. Personally, I tell people to ‘click this link right now’ because I favor strong CTAs that tell people exactly what to do next.
- Focus on the benefits, not the features. This is a little known secret, so take advantage of it! Rather than talking about what is in the product you’re selling, tell people HOW the product benefits them. Who cares if a product has jojoba beads in it? Tell them how the product will gently exfoliate your skin!
- Put your CTA in the beginning, middle, and end of your stories. Most people won’t watch every single frame of your stories, so put your CTA in every frame! It doesn’t have to be a strong CTA each time, but definitely consistently mention what you want them to do.
- Don’t sound sales-y! Use soft selling. In this technique, you build trust and gently remind people of your CTA by not mentioning a strong CTA every time you mention your product or service.
Repetition
Studies show that people will need to see something 7 times before they convert to being a customer. In addition, people won’t see everything you post. So make sure you cover your bases!
Organic sharing
Make sure you combine repetition and soft selling by showing yourself using the product organically! This also makes you seem more authentic. It’s not authentic to only show up on social media when there’s a sale going on. Show up consistently and provide solutions!
Build excitement in anticipation
If you know there will be a sale or if you know you’ll be promoting a new product or service, let people know that the promotion is coming! Don’t spring it on them the day of. Take the Hollywood approach: tease with trailers on your social media!
- Have a ‘coming soon’ page. Use social media to drive people to this page on your website, and capture their emails for your list. This way you can send out ‘last chance’ emails and build your email list at the same time!
Utilize Instagram LIVE and Instagram TV
Same for YouTube and Facebook, or any other social media platform with a LIVE/TV format. These will set you apart from your competitors. Use these for evergreen content that will overcome objections, like:
- “Why now is the best time to ___.”
- “How to find the time to ___.”
- “How to balance ___ and ___.”
Share your story, anticipate their objections, and overcome them!
Intersperse power words into your content
These are words like “new” or “limited.” Using these types of power words strategically grabs attention! Here’s a great list of power words to start implementing into your copy.
Use time-trusted content
Types of content like product guides, tutorials, testimonials, even fun things like ‘Caption This’ all drive engagement and provide value to your audience! As Whitney says: give, don’t just sell.
